Goodbye to California and a night in an Olive Grove

August 23, 2021

So we have left San Diego and are starting our trek back across the country to spend October in New Jersey visiting with much missed family and friends. I am so very torn by leaving. I am very excited to be on the road again. Paul and I both agree, when we stay in one location for more than a week or two we get antsy to move on, we want to travel. But man, will we miss being with Sara, Kevin, and the boys. Yes, it breaks my heart leaving them. We will be back but....

Our last couple of weeks were quiet ones. We got in some hiking, bicycling, and, of course, hanging with some of our favorite people, the Johnson crew! Swimming in their community pool and at the one here at the campground, going with Alec to the mall, finding a fun park, and being able to celebrate Colin's birthday were some of noteworthy times. Making memories is what it is all about and that's what we did.

But now it is back on the road! Our first stop was fun, We got to camp in an olive grove, how's that for different. Desert Olive Farms is owned by Clyde and Grace Edgar. A quiet peaceful oasis on a family owned farm in Brawley, CA, where their own olives are bottled  into luscious olive oils sold in their store in Yuma, AZ, at many farm markets and right there on the farm. They are part of Harvest Hosts, which is a cool membership program, giving RVers an opportunity to stay at unique places for a night while on the road. This was our first time participating and what a great way to start.

Clyde gave us a personal tour of the farm and groves; then into the bottling room for a tasting of their  Olive Oils and Balsamic Vinegars, oh my were they good! All during the tour and tasting, Clyde kept us entertained

with the history of the area including interesting facts on water rights, the growing and bottling of the olives, his and Grace's story, and so much more. He gave us free range to explore the many acres of land which made for a delightful sunset walk. I have to add the directions Grace gave me were fun in themselves, turn right onto Hovley Road, at the second house make a left, go to the two dead trees and make another left, pass through lane of Orange Bird of Paradise on one side and pomegranates trees on the other, Clyde will meet you at the end and direct you further. Yep, that's country.

Bought some delicious Blue Cheese Stuffed Sevillano Olives among other things. Enjoyed them with a lovely summertime dinner of them, California Kalamon Olives, Tomatoes, Mozzarella Cheese, all drizzled with Olive Oil and Balsamic Vinegar. Added to that, some sliced meats, with a loaf of Italian Bread and a couple of glasses of the wine from the winery we visited. Heaven. Oh, those stuffed olives are so good, we bought a second jar before we left!  This is somewhere we will return to when we are back in California.

Goodbye California, we can't wait to come back and explore even more.
